Bio 1

Can you see that crumbling pillar in the forest? It used to be a shrine. It was dedicated to the wind god and was truly magnificent.
One day, a storm came and raged for days on end. The torrential rain threatened to flood the village at the foot of the mountain. The villagers rushed to the shrine to pray for protection. However, the wind god controls the wind, not the rain. He was powerless to stop the flood. However, the wind god managed to divert the water and save the village. The price he had to pay to achieve this was one of his eyes. After the disaster, the people gradually forgot about the wind god. They left the area and the shrine was abandoned.

Bio 2

But the wind god did not forget his followers.
He spent every day on the path to the shrine waiting for them to return. But they didn’t, not a single one. Day after day, year after year he waited, until the path became overgrown with moss and the shrine turned to rubble. Now that crumbling pillar is all that remains of the once magnificent shrine.
The wind god was all alone, and forgotten.
With no followers, he lost his status as a god and should have simply disappeared.

Bio 3

However, he chose to become a spirit.
As a spirit, he is no longer able to offer anything to his people. Yet he still wishes to do everything in his power to protect everyone. Even though he is a mere spirit, he still stands guard over this land. That’s the end of the story. I may be centuries old, but my story is very simple.

Bio 4

There was once a place where the wind blew hard and lightning met thunder. People were afraid of going into the valley. They only knew that a violent battle between a wind dragon and a thunder beast had been raging there for ages. Whenever there was a natural disaster, the villagers would bring a rich selection of food into the mountains and offer it to the divine beasts, hoping they might consider a temporary truce when they saw the humble humans kneeling before them.
One day, an uninvited stranger entered the valley. Though his face looked young, he passed effortlessly through a number of magical fields and arrived in front of the wind dragon.
"You are causing the villagers trouble. How about you stop fighting?"
"What did you say? How dare you talk to me in that tone!"
The wind dragon conjured up a powerful wind in his rage, but the young man didn't move an inch.
"Wh-who are you?"
"I'm a god with no name."

Bio 5

When facing a calm reply from a god, the wind dragon sees it as a kind of provocation.
The strong dominates all. If the god is here to challenge him, for the dragon, it must go all out to face the duel. So it conjured up a tornado and trapped the god inside the eye.
"I'm here to stop a fight, not to pick one. Could you please stop creating thunders and storms that could take the lives of the villagers?"
"Do you expect me to listen to you?"
"I'm a weak god and have limited power to protect them or to stop you. So, I humbly ask you to stop. I accept whatever term you have."
The god respectfully took a bow.
The wind dragon has never seen a god making a request. Just when it hesitated, a thunder strike hit it on its head, sending it down to the bottom of the valley, paralyzed.

Bio 6

When talking with the god, the wind dragon was attacked by the thunder beast, its life in peril.
When in pain, it felt a warm stream of energy flowing through its body, recovering its wounds. It gradually regained consciousness.
"I apologize for forming a pact with you without your consent. But I couldn't think of another way to save you."
"Why did you save me?"
"Like I said, I'm not here to pick a fight. And I don't want to see anyone get hurt or die."
"Are the other gods...as weird as you?"
"I don't think so. Because I'm weak, I know the weak need protection."
"What's your name?"
"I don't have a name."
"You can use my name and be my master. You have the right to do so. My name is Ren."
After gaining the power of the wind dragon, the god expelled the thunder beast from the valley.
From that day, no-one has seen the wind dragon or the thunder beast. They started to see a god of wind who protects the village. People started to build a shrine to worship this kind and powerful god of wind.

The village experienced one of the coldest winters in recent years. Preparations for the Lantern Festival started early this year as the villagers thought it might help to keep them warm in the cold weather. Koroka started collecting bamboo structures in all shapes and sizes. I picked up one of his half-finished colored paper creations and tried to figure out what it was.

"Is this a dragon? I've never seen one with a design like this."

It was as if Koroka had found a new hobby, he joyfully waved the bamboo bark in his hand and started to recount the many lantern designs of the mortal world which I had never seen before and the wishes people placed in them. Then he took out of a few sheets of colored paper and magically created the most magnificently designed dragon lantern. He said the technique was from the legendary home of the dragons where humans and dragons lived together and created a place filled with blessings with the great power of prayer. The dragon lanterns they made were so big that it took dozens of men to carry one. They also made animal lanterns shaped like rabbit and birds, as well as flower basket and moon-shaped ones. As he spoke, Mushishi poked her head out from behind Koroka and asked me to celebrate the holiday with them. There was still some wet paint on her cheeks. I didn't want to spoil the fun, so I went to the pile of colored paper to see what else I could do. When they'd finished making a few lanterns, I looked out at the village at the foot of the mountain.

The winter had come early this year, and the poor crop yield was not enough to feed everyone in the village. Some decided to migrate and find somewhere new to grow crops. For this reason, not many people were working on the festival preparations. Mushishi saw that I was worried as she lit a gloomy light in a rabbit lantern and hung it on a villager's door. The glowing rabbit eyes made the paintings on the lantern look even more festive. After making so many lanterns, it would be a shame if we were the only ones to enjoy them.

During the night, countless bright and colorful paper lanterns were hung in the courtyard of every villager. At first, people were surprised when they woke up in the morning and saw the lanterns. Then they were intrigued by the lanterns' strange designs and joyfully carried them into the streets. Some hung the lanterns on the sedan chair which had been prepared for the celebration. Some people wrote their wishes on them to spread the joy in the crop fields and the mountain roads. Before long, the light of the lanterns had reached every corner of the village.

From our spot in the mountain, Koroka and Mushishi and I watched the people celebrate. They also had a huge dragon lantern, as if to celebrate the illuminated night. Everyone would leave their homeland next year and this place would, perhaps, never again see this sea of lanterns.

But I hoped to see the same smile on Master Ichimokuren's face next year.

Mushishi was murmuring next to me as I watched the dancing flames in the dragon lantern when suddenly I had an eureka moment. The cold winter wind might've been ruthless, but things will change when we have all these lanterns on this winter's day.

A wind swept across the village. I reached out my hand to touch the flames dancing in the lantern. At that moment the wind caught the sparks from a lantern and carried them into the air. The crowd cheered in waves. As the wind swept across thousands of lanterns, the cheering grew louder. It looked as if a rain of flames was flowing upward into the sky above the villagers. But then the falling flames set fire to my clothes. I wasn't sure if the wind was ablaze with the sparks or if it was pushing the flames towards me, but in the midst of the wind and fire, I saw a red fire dragon was formed. It danced in the air and illuminated the whole village. Then it traveled with the wind towards the mountain and disappeared in the clouds. Just as suddenly, a warm breeze flowed into the valley from the point at which the flames had extinguished.

This was my promise: The scorching wind would remain to fill the place where the spring sunshine had been absent for so long. In this way the ice in the river would melt and the crops in the fields would sprout early. The next year's winter would surely see a sea of lanterns after the harvest. And the people would smile again when they met under the lanterns as they had promised.

I raised my hand and a warm breeze flowed down from the roofs carrying the dying sparks of the flames, gently brushing the faces of the villagers under the eaves. People raised their hands in joy, trying to catch the warm breeze.

"The warm breeze feels like spring has come."

Ichimoku Ren is a spirit formed from the wishes of the people of the village. He first met Koroka - a spirit that approached Seimei for help alongside Mushishi - when he had his eyes on the humans' food.

Ichimoku Ren would grant the wishes of the humans, allowing their crops to prosper and watching over their families until eventually, they became convinced that a god was watching over them. They built Ichimoku Ren a temple and worshiped him. Even non-believers would come to bear witness. At the entrances and during prayer, Ichimoku Ren would rub the heads and pat the cheeks of the children, wishing that he was able to let them know he was listening.

However, one day, a great flood threatened the village. In order to protect the villagers that loved him so and were lovingly protected by him in turn, he gave up his eye in order to stop it. Doing so, unfortunately, sacrificed a great amount of Ichimoku Ren's powers, and very slowly he lost his worshipers, degenerating into a spirit - and eventually a monster - so that he wouldn't disappear. Though it was an option to steal life energy from other spirits, Ichimokuren was too proud and kind to do so.

On what was meant to be his deathbed, he was rescued by Seimei after fighting him, receiving an Onmyoji seal that would help his power be restored. Seimei's influence and Hiromasa's funds would bring his temple and worshipers back, and eventually, Ichimoku Ren would be able to watch over the humans once more.
